Streamlined rules keep the focus where it belongs
From simpler rules for determining line of sight to faster setup of each encounter, Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition delivers a tense, satisfying experience with minimal player downtime. Defense dice mitigate the tendency to “math out” attacks, while shorter quests with plenty of natural stopping points mean that even the busiest group can now fit Descent into a varied night of gaming. What’s more, since all necessary statistic, conditions, and effects are listed conveniently on their respective cards, you’ll be able to leave the rulebook in the box!
All of this, along with an intuitive new mechanic for controlling the overlord’s nefarious powers, ensures that Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition retains the tactical challenge of its predecessor, while making Descent more accessible than ever before. Rather than collecting threat tokens to spend on traps, minions, and other nasty tricks, the overlord simply plays cards from his hand based on their clear and straightforward triggering conditions. Just draw cards to your hand each turn, and play them when you choose!
Build your perfect character from eight included classes
Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition’s character selection and creation process gives your group the tools to quickly build a team of heroes that perfectly fit your play style.
Each player begins by choosing one of four major archetypes: Mage, Warrior, Scout, or Healer. Within each archetype are classes, providing distinct play experiences even between multiple players sharing the same archetype. As a warrior, will you take the role of the valiant Knight, providing protection to your physically weaker companions? Or will you play as the mighty Berserker, cutting a swath of destruction through your foes?
And with Second Edition’s enhanced experience system, you’ll have total control over your character’s growth and development. Each class has its own deck of skill cards, and setting your hero on a path to greatness is as simple as selecting your starting skills. As you gain more experience throughout the included campaign, you’ll be able to periodically spend it on additional skills, adding to your hero’s available abilities. For example, once you’ve chosen the Warrior archetype and the Berserker class, will you concentrate on taking down multiple foes at once, or on dealing devastating blows to single combatants? These compelling choices, and many others, drive Second Edition’s quick and intuitive character system.

For those unfamiliar with Descent: Journeys in the Dark, here is a brief overview –
In this popular game of dungeon-delving adventure, one player takes on the role of the overlord, tasked with thwarting the heroes at every turn through the use of a special deck of cards. The other players each control a hero, and they team up to complete certain objectives dictated by a scenario. The scenario being played also prescribes the construction of the board, which is built of interlocking modular pieces to create a new dungeon every time!
With danger lurking in every shadow, combat is a necessity. For such times, Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition uses a unique dice-based system. Players build their dice pools according to their character’s abilities and weapons, and each die in the pool contributes to an attack in different ways. Surges, special symbols that appear on most dice, also let you trigger special effects to make the most of your attacks. And with the horrors awaiting you beneath the surface, you’ll need every advantage you can take...
The dungeons below Terrinoth are crawling with horrible minions of the overlord, all waiting to put an end your quest. However, not only does the overlord have access to the monsters on the board, but his forces are periodically reinforced. If the heroes don’t stay vigilant, they might find themselves quickly overwhelmed by their foes.

En underbar Dungeon Crawler - 9/10
OBS! Denna recension skrevs när 1st Edition var den aktuella versionen av spelet. Jag har inte spelat 2nd Edition. Av vad jag hört så ska 2nd vara en "lättare" version av 1st, men för en bättre åsikt från någon som faktiskt har erfarenhet från 2nd rekommenderar jag att du inte begränsar dig till den här recensionen.
Descent: Journeys in the Dark är ett helt underbart spel för alla som älskar dungeon crawlers. När du spelar Descent spelar du antingen som den onda Overlorden då en av dina dungeons precis har blivit invaderade av de andra spelarna, 2-4 stycken hjältar (OBS! Descent KAN spelas av två personer. En av er kommer då kontrollera flera hjältar). Värt att observera här är att Overlorden INTE är en Dungeon/Game Master. Här finns minsann ingen kärlek mellan spelarna; Hjältarnas uppgift är att storma grottan, stjäla skatter och döda monster. Som Overlord är uppgiften att till varje pris stoppa hjältarna (med monster eller fällor, varför inte förvandla en av dem till en apa?). Men även om Descent är ett alla-mot-en-spel är det även väldigt belönande att förlora som Overlord; du fick precis guida dina vänner genom ett storslaget äventyr.
I lådan finns det som får alla våra inre 12-åringar att nästan börja gråta. Spelet kommer fullt laddat med plastminiatyrer, dungeon tiles, tokens, tärningar och kort. Även om det senare visar sig att du inte gillade Descent i sig, är grejerna du får med det nästan värt det i alla fall. Du får också en regelbok som förklarar det mesta (mer på detta lite längre ner) och en Quest Guide med 9 olika quests att välja från.
Men okej, inget spel är väl perfekt. Vad är minusen? Det finns tre som är värda att ta upp.
1) Speltiden. Ett quest kan lätt ta uppåt 4 timmar att klara av. Descent är förvisso är ett spel som är värt att lägga mycket tid på men för vissa kan detta bli lite väl matnyttigt. Och planerar du att lägga undan det och fortsätta nästa helg, se till att ha ett stort bord som inte används av någon annan då Descent tar plats.
2) Då reglerna visserligen täcks bra av regelboken kommer det till en början konstant komma upp regelfrågor (och efter er första spelomgång kommer ni vid omläsningen av reglerna hitta flera fel ni gjorde). Detta kan till viss del kontras genom att ladda hem Fantasy Flight's FAQ, men även efter det kommer det komma vissa frågor som ni inte kommer hitta något svar på. Jag kan varmt rekommendera att registrera sig på boardgamegeek.com (helt gratis), då det där finns väldigt många trevliga Descent-spelare som gärna kommer hjälpa er med alla frågor. 3) Slutat av vissa quests kan bli lite antiklimaktiska. När hjältarna väl fått tag i skatter på guld-nivå kan de ofta bli något i stil med köttkvarnar. Även det slutgiltiga bossmonstret kan med rätt vapen krossas på några tärningskast.
Trots dessa minus är Descent ändå ett alldeles fantastiskt spel som du inte kommer ångra att du lagt tid och pengar på. Av mig får Descent: Journeys in the Dark en 9:a.2011-07-06 av: Cizak
